Indian food is a food bursting with flavor and spice, exotic AND simple ingredients, and something rather authentic. Most of the time, what is available is North Indian cuisine but this past week I indulged in South Indian. Situated in a construction mess in Northern Irvine, Anapoorna is a wonderfully simple Indian restaurant offering buffet-style cuisine. The food is placed in the far corner of the restaurant and once seated, you just go pick out whatever looks tasty. Regardless of how much or how little you eat, the cost per person is $8.99. I was introduced to this restaurant by someone from the South of India and he validated that this really is a pretty incredible place.
I started off a bit timid (not because I don’t like Indian but because I’m always a bit leery of any kind of meat dish that lands its way into a “buffet”). I loaded up my plate and then returned to the table which had been set with fresh, ice cold water, and really yummy Naan. Before I even mention what I ate, I have to say that the staff at Anapoorna is incredible. Very nice, unobtrusive, and incredibly diligent at making the experience seamless. So here is what I enjoyed (most of it is Vegetarian):
Veg Manchurian, Veg Paloma, Samosa, Salad, Veg Lorna, Lentils, Chutney, Chicken Bruyani, Tikka Masala Chicken, Sambar, Idli (Rice Cake), Dal Mekhani, Aloo Ghobi (A Bell Pepper Veggie Dish), Benign Bharta
Flavor was bursting from every spectrum whether sweet or spicy. All I can say is I’m a fan of this place and if you want something “out of the norm” with it’s own “homemade” twist, go to Anapoorna. Everything was worth trying, even if it’s not your style. I prefer VERY spicy dishes and there were so many options for both spicy and tame. This is a restaurant that could easily go unseen. Don’t miss it – drive through the parking lot until you see the sign. It’s an adventure for your taste buds, your appetite, and your need to experience something “unique”. They offer an array of food, even scrumptious items that appeal to little ones, and they have authentic Indian beverages like Lassi that will intrigue you. Trust me on that. So while the majority of Indian food lovers tend to eat North Indian fare, I’d encourage you to take a walk on the South side.
