Today the world is more conscious about climate change, conscious food choices, supporting farm-to-table movements and encouraging better, healthier lifestyle practices than ever before. With so many advances in science and more and more studies coming out every day, there is no greater place to start than with the foods we consume. Recently I had the opportunity to be introduced to a brand new evolution in beef. Thanks to the visionaries at UC Davis, a natural feed supplement named Mootral was created. As it stands, beef is one of the foods that leaves the largest carbon footprint behind primarily due to the way beef is raised, farmed, and harvested. Neem Biotech’s Past Research
- Neem Biotech has developed the novel combination of garlic and citrus extracts over 10 years and proven in vitro and in vivo efficacy in manipulating rumen fermentation and reducing methanogenesis by 20-27%
- The works have included developing patented extraction processes and addressing the stability of garlic’s natural compounds, which has allowed the raw materials to be commercialised in several agricultural applications
- Early efficacy trials included the rumen simulating technique with sheep and cattle rumen fluid with Prof. Jamie Newbold, the leading Professor of agricultural research at IBERS, UK showing methane reduction of 35% and 99%
- In vivo trials with cattle and sheep in the UK as performed by IBERS and DEFRA showed that initial iterations of the concept could reduce methane emissions from cattle and other ruminants by 20-27%. Furthermore, work conducted by IBERS and DEFRA showed an increased consumption of dry weight of feed and reduced methane production per kilogram dry matter intake
- Neem’s technology was part of a large EU funded collaborative research project SMEthane which included collaboration with Prof. Newbold, Dr David Yanez-Ruiz of CSIC, Professor Veerle Fievez of Ghent University and DEFRA where methane reduction was shown at up to 94%. This work was published in EU Research Agency and UK Government Agency reports as well as peer reviewed journals
- Since the completion of the Pan-European collaborative research project Neem has invested 2 years into creating the current product, which is stable, scalable and affordable and palatable to cows. A key consideration was to ensure ease of market entry as a feed supplement, fit for the feed chain
- Despite the promising historic data, Neem has undertaken extensive further formulation and research to validate and broaden the bank of data that we have to support Mootral’s efficacy. This work is only just reaching conclusion and has as yet not been published in peer reviewed journals, but this will be completed in 2017
- The validation work includes in vitro batch incubations with rumen fluid from animals on varying diets in collaboration with Prof Veerle Fievez at University of Ghent and further iterations of the specialist rumen simulating technique equipment with Professor Gerhard Breves (University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Germany) and Professor Jamie Newbold (IBERS, UK). Batch culture data shows methane reductions of 82% with 26% increase in propionate and other volatile fatty acids suggesting potential increased productivity of the animal as a result of supplementation
- Additional in vivo methods will be employed throughout 2017 to further complement and investigate palatability, methane reduction and daily live weight gain in cattle on commercial farms and test facilities to validate our original data. Within these studies, we will also look into other associated methane and nitrate mitigation effect strategies in areas such as manure
Breaking New Scientific Ground
- As our data strongly suggests that the effect of our solution, in contrast to other historically studied alternatives, is not transient, we have decided to validate the on-going changes in the gut microbiome at a genomic level. This is specifically to show that the changes in the rumen microbiome that are evidenced are not transient but show a stable transition in the bacterial population from one geared to methane production to one promoting growth. This is in comparison to work done previously which only considers the before/after genomics but does not consider stability of any changes affected by the dietary intervention
- The aim is to use the data to refine our intervention and intervention strategy to further improve the reduction in methanogenesis whilst promoting the production of the specific short chain fatty acids that promote animal growth
- We are currently working with three research institutes in Hannover (Germany), Ghent (Belgium) and Aberystwyth (Wales) in independent trials to validate this approach.
