In the wake of the ongoing limitations on travel, staying local can be your greatest asset to wondrous release. In the heart of Los Angeles, luxury resides in Beverly Hills but no place as iconic as in the Beverly Hills Hotel. This month should you feel that itch to get away and succumb to much needed escape, gas up, pack those fantastic vintage bags you’ve been dying to use, throw in some fabulous dresses, dapper threads, and saunter over to the hotel pool and book the new #GrayMalinCabana!
The Hotel has announced their fabulous partnership with Gray Malin for a pop-up redesign of Cabana One. Malin collaborated with Serena & Lily to bring their brand’s coastal-meets-sophisticated furnishings to one poolside cabana. Paying homage to the history of the hotel dating back to 1949 when CW Stockwell’s signature banana leaf wallpaper—Martinique—elevated hospitality, the updated designs lend to the feel of times passed, and in the wake of the many things happening in all of our lives, the time to revel in the beauty and designs that emit joy and a sense of the surreal has never been more on-the-menu.
“We look forward to providing our guests with an enhanced cabana experience that will lovingly highlight the pool’s legendary history,” says Edward Mady, regional director and general manager.
Gray Malin did a wonderful job maintaining the hotel’s timeless Hollywood design while also incorporating his signature whimsical and vibrant style.
Cabana One also features a fabrication upgrade to the canopy so as you look up, baby pink and soft white stripes greet you. From props that only Malin can envision such as the stacked 1940’s vintage seafoam green luggage set housing the pink rotary 1950’s telephone to his stylistic prints launched in the Beverly Hills Hotel’s redesign in 2019, the Gray Malin Cabana is magical. The cabana includes hand-stitched decorative throw pillows and blankets, a new outdoor umbrella with dainty yet chic tassels that will provide the perfect shade.
The Cabana’s unique touches with multiple textures exemplified in rattans, raffias and other natural textures that accompany custom chaises, a handwoven rug, hanging chair, and cool sectional sofa make this feel like more of a retreat than a cabana.

All too thrilled to talk to Malin about this new pop-up, I had the pleasure of asking about the new designs.
What inspired the design theme for the new cabana?
This inspiration was actually from my photography. I wanted to allow a visitor to step into one of my retro photographs from my series, Gray Malin at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Therefore I developed a mixture of a relaxed Californian and glamorous style, with colorful patterns and playful elements such as a ‘press for champagne button’ and vintage luggage. Having Serena & Lily as our furniture partner really allowed us to capture this design theme and run with it.
What design element played into the aspects of comfort in the furnishings?
The artwork was the most important for the design. We chose four pieces from my series, including shots from the front entrance and poolside chaise lounges to set a glamorous tone. To drive home the timeless feel of the hotel, we used CW Stockwell’s Martinique wallpaper to surround the space. Then to add a bit of California outdoor comfort, we chose wonderful throw pillows like the Isla, Arcata and Avails pillows, an inviting sectional sofa, as well as elements like an outdoor rug, and a chandelier to make the cabana feel both homey and like a relaxing retreat. The fabrics which the couch, cushions, and chaises loungers were fabricated with also played a key role in creating a comfortable feel which Serena & Lily worked very closely with us to advise on and even created custom upholstery for this project.
If you could come up with a word and a quote to summarize the vibe of the new cabana what would they be?
Retro Chic!
This cabana accentuates the spirit and the glamour at The Beverly Hills Hotel, celebrating its long standing history while putting my own spin on vintage luxury that allows my art to come to life. It is surely a stunner and perfect little touches such as a “press for champagne button”, rattan, and basketweave details as well as prints from my Gray Malin at The Beverly Hills Hotel series make for an ideal place to hang out poolside.
What piece is most you?
The Capistrano Outdoor Hanging Chair was a perfect addition and one that I knew I wanted to include in order to take the cabana to the next level in terms of style and relaxation. I have two hanging chairs in my home that I absolutely love, so it was an easy decision to incorporate a little bit of myself and the comfort that I find in my own space.
