Mexology with Aaron Melendrez

Mixology, Meet Mexology with Aaron Melendrez at Uptown Provisions and Hpnotiq

Every year from mid-September to mid-October, we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. Considering we have a population in America of 63.6 million Hispanics and Latinos (U.S. Census Bureau ACS, 2023), this Hispanic Heritage month, we want to remind readers of the many contributions Latinx and Chicanx have made to the nation. From Rosie (aka Rosa) the Riveter to Delores Huerta (most influential labor activist), to Luis E. Miramontes (invented birth control pills) and Guillermo González Camarena (invented the color TV), Mexican Americans have made mass contributions to the progress and innovation of the United States. Our population accounts for 19.1% of the U.S. population—imagine the spending power of those numbers!

In the wake of a growing movement to ensure visibility of marginalized communities, we want to celebrate the incredible Latinx and Chicanx community contributing to the conversation in a productive, delicious and insightful way. This week, we’re focused on one “Mexologist” that brings his passion for his heritage to the libations he imbibes and the cultural importance of fusing flavor in his food.

Meet Aaron Melendrez.

Father, husband, old soul, tastemaker, heavy shift lifter, author, part time punk. Melendrez also happens to be the chef at Uptown Provisions in Whittier, California.

Aaron Melendrez has created some incredible drinks to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. These cocktails are a terrific way to slip into fall, and they’re brand-new creations you won’t find anywhere else.

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you?

In my busy ass life, it gives me a minute to pull back and reflect on everything that makes being MEXICAN so special.  It also gives me a month to elaborate a little deeper about my upbringing and give people a more intimate lens of being a 5th generation Mexican American.

What is one of the most memorable flavors that takes you back to childhood?

Hahaha, chicken bouillon, weenie con huevos, enchiladas, Tampico, fideo. Albondigas. tortillas quemadas,  arroz con leche, Humble working class Mexican stuff

Which cocktail was the most challenging to create?

The Hpnotiq Negroni.

What inspired each libation?

Adapting my style and personal touch to misconceived brands. Hpnotiq is a wonderful tool when used in the right proportions. More then just a pretty Hulk haha

What intrigues you most about mixology?
