TOMS One for One: With Every Product that you Purchase, TOMS will Help a Person in Need. One for One. Learn More at TOMS.comGrowing up in the heart of where “Dogtown and Z-Boys” began, I’m no stranger to skateboarding. Sure, ATOD Magazine is not known for covering many sports events but once in a while there is a story we can’t help but tell. That story was meant to be about Chris Cole and Matt Berger. While we were scheduled to interview Chris Cole, Matt Berger, and Sean Malta (at the request of the Event PR company – VOCAL PR), unfortunately in the midst of the chaos, questions were received but now we are waiting on VOCAL PR to follow through. Alas, for now, you must be content with the amazing shots, our resident Photojournalist, Tram Tram got from the pit floor.

That said, rather than amuse you with my unimpressive attempt to speak “skate”, I’m going to tell you about the incredible talent that is (and has) completely changed the sport. This month the league of Street Skateboarders came together for a Nike sponsored World Tour. The competition was close and with 3 Heats to place, well, let’s just say we got a fair look into the hard work, creativity, sheer talent, and musings of over 20 Skaters.

And while yes, I was wowed with “ollies”, “270’s”,  “50/50 combos”, and “backside double flips” (see, I pay attention!), the real story here comes from the journey of both skaters that were there competing: Chris Cole and Matt Berger. I’m including the interview questions I sent to each of them and let’s hope PR gets on it so I can share their story with each of you.

Highlights from the Streetleague Skateboard Nike World Tour included Matt Berger’s impressive ability to pull out all the stops, tricks, and tenacity to stay in the Top 2 position amidst the veterans; Nyjah Huston who proved just why he is the top purse winner; Paul Rodriguez made every girl in the stadium swoon but showed why he is a fan favorite; and Torey Pudwill showed impressive speed and innovative moves.

Chris Cole. The Interview we hope to finish:

1. When you were a kid picking up a skateboard for the first time, was it just to get around – or – was it something you subconsciously felt a passion for?

2. What has been one of your toughest challenges you’ve faced in the pro-skating world? (Staying on top, being relevant, dealing with politics, injuries, etc.)

3. I grew up in Venice and Santa Monica and was fortunate enough to see the the Zephyr team skating around “Dogtown”. Was mind blowing. Was/Is there a veteran skater you have watched and thought, “Damn. I gotta do that!”

4. It’s easy to push too far or get caught up in the world of pro sports. What keeps you focused and grounded?

5. As a dad, what has been one of the funnest things you’ve gotten to do with your kids 1) skate-wise, and 2) just being able to have the freedom to take them on adventures?

6. What has been one of your more humbling realities as a skater?

7. Greatest advice you’ve been given by: 1) Your family, 2) Your wife, 3) Your mentors.

*I had the pleasure of meeting Chris on the pit floor. A gentleman, a true competitor, and he even paused here and there to o cuddle up with his son.

Matt Berger.

1. Being the 1st newcomer to ever make the Finals, what is the driving force to make sure you take a spot in top?
2. As a kid, what was the most insane thing you did when you really started skating?
3.  You are inspiring hopefuls everywhere to really take a shot. What would you tell them about going for it?
4. What song will you be playing in your head right before you get your shot at the Finals? (The one that just pushes you to go full force.)
