SXSW – South by SouthWestĀ® Austin TrendsTuesā¢
by Ali Levine of Ali Levine Designs
The South by SouthwestĀ® (SXSWĀ®) Conferences & Festivals offer the unique convergence of original music, independent films, and emerging technologies. Fostering creative and professional growth alike, SXSWĀ® is the premier destination for discovery and we here at Ali Levine Design love discovering new and upcoming talent. Especially talent with great style.
With more than 50,000 people coming and going through a week and a half of events and performances, partying and wandering until dawn, the festival, now in its 25th year, is a mecca for trend-watchers from all corners. But as with everything at SXSWĀ®, the unsanctioned is often cooler. Street and stage style encompassed retro hair metal and punk, global-prep and neo-grunge, sometimes on the same body.
Keeping our eyes peeled for trends and style makers was almost as fun as actually being there. Here’s some trend and style highlights:
Jober: Ā I love how Joseph Gordon-Levitt brought his A-Game to the SXSWĀ® Red Carpet. Ā Nice to see someone buck the casual trend that most everyone else had.
Charlie XCX – I love plaids. Ā I would love this look even more if it weren’t for the shoes.
Katarina: Tokimonsta normally likes rabbit masks, plaid, interesting colored glasses, and lots of hats. Ā I love her hair and the pattern on the shirt. It looks like floral or porcelain.
Kelley: Of course, my favorite act is Prince! Who is looking fabulous, as always! Prince is on point here, rocking the deep purple suit with the magenta dress shirt And pocket square to match.
I noticed a trend happening with these three dapper gentleman… Hats are hot for festival gear! Matthew looks cool and hip in his fedora.
Black Thought of the roots rocks a cab driver style hat. Ā The aviators go well with his look.
Talib Kweli does the fitted cab driver hat look well.
Caleb: Ā Ben Sollee‘s style was a favorite and I really enjoyed seeing a fellow Kentuckian shine in the spotlight. I became a fan almost instantly after learning he played the cello — such an awesome instrument — and really started to dig his fashion style. Slightly preppy and sophisticated mixed with a little hipster creates a fun, trendy style that pairs well with his sound and connects his to his roots, especially in his video “A Few Honest Words” at the Lincoln Memorial– Gotta love flannel!
Another well-styled favorite of mine is Ivan and Alyosha. All are usually casually dressed and all are definitely keeping up with men’s current trends. From cardigans, V-neck shirts, & boots to striped tanks, shorts, and bright sunglasses, the boys are on their way to success and are going to look good doing it!
Toi: Hunter Valentine: I am a sucker for all black and these sexy chicks do it well. I am a sucker for the drummer, but all three have style for days. Plus they I hear they are so down to earth.
Depeche Mode: My boys never Ā lose their dapper slick style. This goth girl is always excited to see my people doing it and doing it well.
