It’s been a while since I found food worthy of writing about but after going multiple times to this one particular restaurant, I can say, with utmost certainty that there is some very exquisite cuisine in the “OC”. Allow me to introduce you to Chef Yvon Goetz and The Winery Restaurant and Wine Bar located at the District in Tustin, CA. Hailing from Strasbourg, France, Chef Yvon brings a bit of French family tradition with his signature “YG Alsation Pizza” inspired by his grandmother, while also entertaining your palate with cuisine that exudes flavor and authenticity to such perfection, you’re in heaven. I must give my Ode to the Chef with my personal favorite, the daily special: “Foie Gras”. The foie gras literally entices your taste buds and once it touches your lips, the buttery, rich, perfectly balanced flavor takes hold. The preparation of the foie gras changes regularly but I have yet to be disappointed. A dessert item worth mentioning is the Crème de la Crème, the crème brulee. Rich, moist, creamy goodness with a twist of chocolate brimming at the base makes this indulgent delight almost orgasmic. The menu selection is impressive. However, la pièce de résistance is the infinite list of wines – BY THE GLASS – to the tune of up to 650 varietals. From all around the world, Chef Yvon and Sommalier, William Lewis, have selected some of the most delectable wines from a little bubbly like Bollinger, to Screaming Eagle, and Chateau Margaux. Regardless of what kind of wine beckons, there is sure to be something you desire.
The beauty of this restaurant is it suits those with sophisticated palates and those merely in search of some tasty food and a new spin on some traditional favorites. Let me walk you through the restaurant:
Upon arrival, I see the “Valet” sign. $5.00 to park your car which is refreshing right from the start, with complimentary Valet Monday-Friday at lunch. Walk through the double doors and you immediately see a wall lined with wine bottles, a Hostess, and usually the Manager. They take you to the right where the dining room opens up. To the right are the “Chef’s Tables” and booths, straight ahead, open tables; to the left, booths and the bar. The bar is superb and they feature a “Crush Hour” instead of a Happy Hour (a refreshing alternative), and it is available 7 days a week including an expanded Crush Hour from 4:30-10pm on Sunday’s, which also features live Jazz. Every detail is given the utmost attention and is most impressive; even down to the marble bathrooms that house incredible paintings. The Winery goes one step further offering a section for Cigar Aficionados in the patio outside and the Chef has an impressive selection of cigars available for purchase. Overall, this is not another “wine stop” like every other. The food is truly exquisite, the Front House is always pleasant, and the environment is enticing and welcoming.
A notable mention: Executive Chef Yvon Goetz and Chef Danny Garcia were recently featured on Good Morning LA as part of a pre-Oscar culinary line-up of “Must-Eat” restaurants in LA and Orange County.
