Situated in Marina del Rey, as you drive (or stroll) along Admiralty Way, the scent of sweet and salty envelops you.
Among a selection of restaurants, shops, and hotels, you’ll see the Marriott hotel and if you squint hard enough, you might even see the sign for its cool bar and lounge: GLOW.
GLOW is admittedly a bit out of place, but once you valet park (albeit one of the tiniest and narrow valet drop-offs I’ve seen), you get your ticket and head in through the double doors. GLOW is an outer bar and lounge that has an air of cool, an ambiance of Zen, and a slightly neglected plethora of chic outdoor furniture.
Arriving just before 5 p.m. on a Sunday, I was under the assumption that there would be a few servers outside and cocktail menus would be resting on the tables. Alas, it was a bit of a ghost town. I stepped back inside to the main lobby bar and inquired about where the servers might be.
The one “must-know” about any hotel lounge/bar is that the wait can seem longer than normal but it’s not because they don’t care. Most servers have to work the pool, the lounge, the patios, and sometimes even a private party all at the same time. It’s the downside of multitasking.
Soon, a peppy, red-haired server arrived with a gleaming smile and menus. We decided to start with some bubbles. I perused the choices and there are four options available by the glass. I went with Perrier-Jouet Grand Brut. Cold and crisp, this is good but I still prefer Prosecco.
Next, the server returned with fresh sparkling water, a few wedges of lime, and convinced us to give the calamari a try. The calamari is served with a Thai chile sauce and roasted jalepeno aioli. While good, a few pieces were undercooked (not ideal).
We then ordered a bottle of 2010 La Crema Pinot Noir, a turkey burger served with pickled slaw and siracha mayonaise on a brioche bun, fries, and an order of truffle chips. The burger arrived and was cooked just so (siracha is a nice touch), the fries are tasty, but as the meal came to a close, we realized those truffle chips never did make it out of the kitchen – unfortunate.
GLOW has potential; It’s a great place to come sit outside and just chat with friends over drinks or a fun space to host a party.
Sure, there are some kinks to work out but come summer, this place should be flooded with people.
*Note that the cocktail menu boasts a fun array of drinks made with freshly squeezed juices including a “Teal Tini,” “Chocolate Strawberry Milk,” and the “Marina Sunset.”
